Muskoka Heritage Place is an important cultural asset for Huntsville, playing a crucial role in celebrating and preserving the distinct character of the community. To help guide the future of MHP, we are developing a 5-year strategic plan to direct future improvements and investments into the historical landmark.
The strategic planning process was led by the Community Service Division teamand guided by these 5 pillars:
Diversity
Accessibility
Connectivity
Community
Sustainability
It engaged many Muskoka Heritage Place (MHP) stakeholders including museum staff and volunteers; Town of Huntsville Council, Staff, and Accessibility Advisory Committee; peer organizations; and community partners, users and residents. Their thoughts and opinions were gathered through facilitated discussions and survey participation. It also consideredindustry trends, best practices, demographic shifts, infrastructure requirements, and relevant strategic plans and initiatives.
What We Heard
Key themes emerging from the data include:
Diversify and expandprogramming to diversify audiences, staff and volunteers.
Focus on developing evening, adult, off-season (Oct-May) and local programming.
Leverage the museum’s natural and builtassetsi.e. local stories, the Portage Flyer train as the world’s shortest commercial narrow-gauge railway, Cann Lake. (ecological/environmental opportunities), and walkability to downtown amenities.
Refreshthe visitor experience, rotating exhibits and village experiences more often to engage new and repeat visitors.
Strengthen awareness and access through infrastructure investments, alternativeprogramming, and better communication.
Build greater capacity amongst staff and volunteers with new tools andhuman resources.
These are captured in the draft priorities, goals and objectivesset out below as Strategic Plan – Preliminary Findings. We have also updated our vision, mission, and values to align with our governing body, the Town of Huntsville and the community we serve, ensuring weremain relevant, responsive and reflective of their evolving needs, interests and priorities.
